OPENSAFETY FOR PROFINET

After presentation of openSAFETY solutions for SERCOS III, Modbus TCP, EtherNet TCP/IP, and POWERLINK at this year's Hanover Fair, there is now an openSAFETY standard for PROFINET. Thus openSAFETY is available for all important real-time Ethernet protocols and covers 91 % of the Industrial Ethernet market. With openSAFETY, only the Ethernet POWERLINK Standardization Group (EPSG) offers a ready-to-use safety technology that runs on all transport protocols. openSAFETY is a development independent of all fieldbusses. For a long time, the automation industry has called for a globally uniform standard for safety systems, as the development of safety-related technology is very cost-intensive and the investment risk is high. With openSAFETY, the first completely open safety-related data transmission protocol for all areas of automation, the EPSG has laid the foundation. With communication cycles in the microsecond range, the protocol certified by the TÜV Rheinland and TÜV Süd guarantees fastest reaction times and highest safety and is suitable for use in systems up to SIL 3.

The EPSG actively supports the use of openSAFETY with arbitrary transport protocols, and offers, for example, help with certification and conformance tests. The openness of openSAFETY applies both technologically and legally: The protocol is available for free download as open-source software. The BSD license and its potential for bus-independent use guarantee all operators and users of this technology the highest level of investment security and enable manufacturers and plant operators to significantly reduce development costs.

Sercos with new website

Sercos starts the year 2011 with a completely re-designed website. "With this, we are also emphasizing the visual technical evolution that sercos has gone through", said Peter Lutz, Managing Director of sercos international. The new logo is complemented by a red "s" as an integrated picture element. Typography and chromatics with red and anthracite strengthen the technological and modern appearance. The logo is accompanied by a new slogan: 'sercos - the automation bus'. This illustrates that sercos has undergone a major evolutionary step from a pure drive bus to universal automation bus. Earlier, machinery and plant engineering usually required several bus systems for the different needs of data communications. With the new evolutionary stage of sercos, this belongs to the past: a single bus for a large variety of automation equipment, covering drive communication as well as security, I/O communication, and additional Ethernet protocols. This reduces the number of interfaces, which enables standardized engineering and scalable functionalities. The new corporate identity will be introduced bit by bit in all communication media. The new design will be used for the first time for the Hanover Industrial Fair 2011.
